This is a habit tracker that lives in your spreadsheet and does the counting for you. Type an x when you complete a habit, and the file updates your progress percentage, your best streak for every habit, a daily completion count, and two live charts. There are no macros and no scripts, which means Excel will not show you a security warning when you open it, and there is nothing that can break with an update.
We are Scribpal, a notebook and planner manufacturer from Hyderabad. We built this as the digital companion to the habit tracker printed in our planners, and it follows the same layout: habits down the side, days across the top, one mark per day.
What the tracker does automatically
- Progress per habit. Days done against your monthly goal, shown as a percentage with an in-cell progress bar.
- Best streak per habit. The longest unbroken run of days for each habit, recalculated every time you add a mark.
- Daily totals. A row showing how many habits you completed each day, so you can spot your strong and weak days of the week.
- Month completion score. One number for the whole month, ignoring any habit rows you leave empty.
- Two live charts. A bar chart of completion by habit and a line chart of habits done per day, on their own tab.
- Weekday awareness. Set the month and year once, and the sheet labels every date with its weekday and adjusts the goal to the real number of days in that month.
How to set it up (3 steps, about a minute)
- Download the file above and open it in Excel, LibreOffice, or upload it to Google Sheets (steps below).
- Set the month and year in the two yellow cells, and type your habits in the yellow column. Row one is a filled example: clear its marks and rename it.
- Type x in a box each time you complete a habit. The box turns orange and every number and chart updates on its own.
Using it in Google Sheets
The same file works as a Google Sheets habit tracker with no changes:
- Go to drive.google.com and drag the downloaded file in, or use New, then File upload.
- Double-click the uploaded file. It opens in Google Sheets automatically.
- Optional: choose File, then Save as Google Sheets to convert it fully, which also makes it editable in the Sheets mobile app.
The formulas, streaks, orange highlighting and progress bars all carry over. Once converted, you can mark habits from the Google Sheets app on any Android phone or iPhone, and marking a day takes about five seconds.
Why there are no macros in this tracker
Most spreadsheet habit trackers you will find online use macros or scripts for their streaks and dashboards. The moment you open one of those, you get a security warning asking you to enable content, and in Google Sheets an unverified-app permission screen. We built the entire tracker, streaks included, from plain formulas and conditional formatting. Nothing to enable, nothing to trust, and it will keep working in five years.
Spreadsheet, paper, or both?
The spreadsheet is better at trends: streaks, graphs, and comparing months. Paper is better at being seen, because a printed tracker on your desk reminds you before you have opened your laptop. Most people who stick with habit tracking long-term end up using both, which is why the printable PDF version of this tracker is also free, in A4 and A5.
And when you want the paper version with a proper binding rather than a stapled printout, the habit tracker is built into every month of our undated daily planners, alongside daily to-do lists and sleep and water tracking, from Rs 299 delivered across India.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Excel habit tracker free?
Yes, completely. Download it, keep it, reuse it every month. No email signup and no locked cells you have to pay to open.
Which versions of Excel does it work in?
Excel 2007 and anything newer, including Excel for Mac and Excel Online. It also works in LibreOffice Calc and Google Sheets, because it uses only standard formulas.
Does it work in Google Sheets?
Yes. Upload the file to Google Drive and open it. Everything carries over: formulas, streaks, highlighting and progress bars. See the steps above.
How do I start a new month?
Either duplicate the tab and clear the marks, or change the month and year cells and clear the grid. Duplicating the tab first keeps your history so streaks and charts from past months stay viewable.
Can I track more than 10 habits?
The template ships with ten rows because three to five habits is the realistic sweet spot for actually building them. If you need more rows, insert them inside the grid and copy the formulas from the Done, Goal, Progress and Best streak columns down.
Why is my streak showing zero?
Streaks count consecutive marked days. A single missed day resets the current run, and the Best streak column shows your longest run in the month so far. Make sure you are typing a lowercase x, or selecting it from the dropdown in each cell.
